Defining Sustainability and Accessibility

Sustainability is a term that refers to strategies and practices that support our current society and ecosystem, while also protecting our enviroment and planet for future generations. While there are many different types of sustainability, some of the areas that you are probably familiar with include:

  • Using renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power, and reducing our dependence on fossil fuels such as oil and gas
  • Reducing carbon emissions to slow down the rate of global warming and climate change
  • Reducing waste by creating fewer disposable items and/or recycling or upcycling used items

Learn more about how we define sustainability at UCLA's What is Sustainability? webpage, where you'll find a helpful video and more detailed descriptions of what sustainability is!

Accessibility is when a product, service, or place can be used and experienced by everyone, including people with different kinds of disabilities. When we think about accessibility in a physical places such as a building or park, we are thinking about how that place is designed so that everyone can experience all of the resources in that space.
