Welcome to Coney Island Creek! This estuary is the last remaining area of a salt marsh that once separated the mainland of Brooklyn from the sand dunes of Coney Island. Today, Coney Island Creek is surrounded by parks and residential areas, and is a popular place for boating and other outdoor activities, and an important habitat for wildlife. Currently, New York City is proposing to build a new ferry terminal in Coney Island Creek, which would expand transportation options for residents of southern Brooklyn, but could also damage the delicate ecosystem of the creek. How can you design places and spaces in Coney Island Creek that make this place accessible for all New Yorkers, while also minimizing waste and human impact on the environment?
